White Tower Formation

Soon after the Breaking of the World, the Aes Sedai decided to consolidate their power. None of these Aes Sedai had been alive before the Breaking. While it is entirely possible that Aes Sedai living before the Breaking had the longevity to live through the Breaking, the violent nature of the period prevented this from actually taking place. Further evidence that no Sisters survived the Breaking are the large numbers of lost Talents and abilities.

The first step towards concentrating Aes Sedai power was the construction of Tar Valon and the White Tower. The construction of Tar Valon began approximately one hundred years after the Breaking. Tar Valon was completely constructed by Ogier stonemasons, who were given free reign in the design of the city. This led to the organic nature of the city, certainly the most beautiful in the world. Only the White Tower, designed by the Aes Sedai themselves, lacks the appearance of life that is evident in most Ogier stonework. The White Tower is one of the most impressive buildings in the world, completed by the Ogier with aid from Aes Sedai using the One Power.

It was during this period that the Sisters began a campaign to find and punish any women pretending to be Aes Sedai. Apparently this was a great deal more common at the time than in today’s world. Some of these women were most likely wilders who thought themselves worthy of name. Others, though, were almost certainly Aes Sedai who resisted the consolidation of power which their Sisters were proposing. There is evidence that a great many Aes Sedai were forced to bend knee to the Amyrlin Seat and the White Tower.
