Shayol Ghul

North of the Mountains of Dhoom, deep within the Blight, lies the volcanic mountain called Shayol Ghul. Ancient texts indicate that during the Age of Legends the area around Shayol Ghul was a peaceful island. Now, though, it is anything but peaceful - lightning streaks up at an ashen sky, clouds obscuring the peak of Shayol Ghul.

Scattered vents release smoke and steam into the cold, dry air which surrounds the mountain. One such vent is the entrance to a tunnel which leads within Shayol Ghul. Sharp spikes reach from the roof of the tunnel toward any brave enough to venture within. The tunnel eventually opens into a large cavern, named by men the Pit of Doom.

It is in this cavern that one can sense the Bore drilled into the Dark One’s prison. While not physically closer to the Bore than any other location, a certain thinness in the Pattern allows its presence to be sensed from within the Pit of Doom.

When Lews Therin and the Hundred Companions arrived at Shayol Ghul they found not only the Dark One but the Forsaken as well. Led by Lews Therin, these men attempted to close the Bore with seven seals. But the sealing was flawed, its success limited by the absence of women in the endeavor. Even now, rumor says, one venturing into the Pit of Doom can sense the Bore has grown, blocked more and more tenuously be the failing seals. The forces of the Shadow stir, and soon the Dark One will reach again across the earth.
