Seanchan Exotic Animals

When Luthair’s expedition first arrived on the continent of Seanchan, they were faced by fearsome armies. But these armies had an added advantage, a number of exotic animals which Luthair’s soldiers initially mistook for some sort of Shadowspawn.

These creatures were not Shadowspawn, though. They were actually creatures brought back from parallel universes, through the use of Portal Stones. Most likely brought back some time after the Breaking to help fight against actual Shadowspawn, these creatures posed a serious threat to Luthair’s armies.

Once Luthair’s armies had conquered Seanchan, they adopted these exotic creatures into their own forces. It is these very animals which now inspire fear into the armies on the mainland of what was once Hawkwing’s empire.

These exotic animals in general suffer high mortality rates as they mature, making them extremely valuable. In general they are fairly intelligent, and all have proven their worth in the armies of the Seanchan. Among the most prevalent exotic animals are the torm, grolm, lopar, and corlm. These animals are not all confined to land, as both the raken and to’raken are more at home in the air than on the ground.

Handlers of these exotic animals are known as morat. A handler of torm would be known as morat’torm. Those who become masters have the attached prefix der, as in der’morat’torm.

The exotic animals of the Seanchan have proven themselves important assets to their armies, both for their skill in battle and their ability to inspire fear in any foe those armies might face.
