Mazrim Taim

Over the Ages, some men who discovered they could channel the One Power named themselves the Dragon Reborn. Thousands flocked to their banners. These false Dragons were greatly feared for the dangers they presented.

Once such man is Mazrim Taim. Taim, who discovered he could channel saidin, named himself the Dragon Reborn and gathered an army. He ravaged Saldaea before Aes Sedai were able to capture him, a necessary result of other events in the world. For once the true Dragon Reborn, Rand al’Thor, proclaimed himself, the Pattern no longer had room for false Dragons.

But some of Mazrim Taim’s followers helped him escape his Aes Sedai captors, and he eventually came to answer al’Thor’s amnesty for men who could channel. Taim had managed to hold off the taint on saidin for years, and knew how to do many things with the One Power.

Rand al’Thor chose to give Taim a great deal of responsibility. Taim is now the head of the Black Tower. He has been charged with finding and training men who can channel. Under Taim’s direction, the Asha’man of the Black Tower have become a dangerous weapon for the Dragon Reborn to command.

Taim is obviously a proud man, and it seems that he resents being Rand’s second. How this will affect his future relationship with Rand is uncertain. But friction between Rand and his second in command could pose a major problem as Tarmon Gai’don fast approaches.
