Guaire Amalasan

Few men have affected the world to as great a degree as Guaire Amalasan. Amalasan was not the first man who could channel to proclaim himself the Dragon Reborn after the death of Lews Therin, but he was certainly the most successful. Very little is known about Amalasan himself, which is odd when one considers he was one of the most influential persons to walk the earth since the Breaking. He was in his twenties, a well-educated man who was charismatic, intelligent, and a great general. Any other knowledge about this man who rocked the world has been lost over time.

Amalasan’s rise to power was swift. He immediately gathered a large following, drawn from men of every nation, and began conquering nation after nation. Calling his followers the People of the Dragon, Amalasan laid siege to the Stone of Tear in hopes of claiming Callandor. It was the bad luck of Amalasan that another great man rose to power at the same time - Artur Hawkwing. This young ta’veren king was the only man who could even draw to a stalemate with Amalasan’s forces. Even though his armies without fail outnumbered Hawkwing’s, Amalasan often found himself defeated after a battle with the young king of Shandalle. And it was Hawkwing who led the charge which finally captured Amalasan.

The stories of most false Dragons end with their capture by Aes Sedai. They are transported back to the White Tower where they are gentled. But in the case of Amalasan, it was not this simple. Two huge armies were roused to try and rescue Amalasan. His followers actually reached the White Tower itself in their attempts to free him before Hawkwing’s army turned them away. Amalasan was eventually tried and gentled.

Amalasan was not the first man to proclaim himself the Dragon Reborn. But his success encouraged other false Dragons to try and duplicate his rise to power. The string of false Dragons ended recently with the coming of the true Dragon Reborn, Rand al’Thor.
