World of the Aelfinn and Eelfinn

Little is known about the Aelfinn and Eelfinn, aside that they are two separate races totally alien from humanity. Similarly, little is known of the world they inhabit, a world often referred to as Finnland.

There are only three ways to enter Finnland. There are two ter’angreal doorways that serve as entrances. They are easily distinguishable, as one features wavy lines and the other is inscribed with triangles. The other entrance is the Tower of Ghenjei, a tower of burnished steel two hundred feet tall and forty feet in diameter.

The Aelfinn, who vaguely resemble snakes, can be reached by traveling through the ter’angreal doorway with the wavy lines. A person traveling through the doorway may ask the Aelfinn any three questions. These questions will be answered truthfully, though not always in a manner the questioner might understand. It is unclear what the Aelfinn gain from this exchange; some think they might receive some sort of pleasure from reading the futures of humans.

The Eelfinn, who resemble foxes, are reached through the ter’angreal with the triangles. They are able to grant three wishes for a person traveling to their world, but they exact a price. Little is known about the price, save that it can be very steep indeed.

Virtually nothing is known about the Aelfinn and Eelfinn themselves, but the children’s game of Snakes and Foxes is a remembrance of dealings with them. Children quit playing the game when they realize there is no way to win, except to cheat. One of the opening lines of the game is "courage to strengthen, fire to blind, music to daze, iron to bind."

Despite the dangers, knowledgeable people can gain a great deal through dealings with the Aelfinn and Eelfinn. But to deal with the Eelfinn, one must be willing to pay the price.
