Elyas Machera

Elyas Machera is an extremely interesting man, with a history known only to a few other than himself.

It was Elyas who found Perrin Aybara and Egwene al’Vere struggling toward Caemlyn after crossing the River Arinelle. Elyas’ animal skin clothing and golden eyes were initially disconcerting. When he revealed that he was friends with wolves, both thought him at least slightly insane.

However, Elyas really can communicate with the wolves, and it was Elyas who made it known to Perrin that he was capable of the same.

Elyas’ history is known to few, by his own choice. Given some of the events in his past, this is undoubtedly a wise decision.

Elyas spent some of his earlier life as a Warder. The discovery of his ability to speak with wolves caused numerous Aes Sedai to take an interest in him. Some Sisters of the Red Ajah actually wanted to gentle him, though of course that would have done nothing. Speaking with the wolves is an old thing, having nothing to do with the One Power; men communicating with wolves was old before men ever touched the Power.

But Elyas did not like the idea of the Red Ajah even attempting to gentle him, so he escaped from the White Tower and Tar Valon. In the attempt he was forced to kill several other Warders, something he greatly regrets.

He has since spent his life living with the wolves, having little interaction with other people. In general he does not like people much, preferring the company of his friends the wolves.
