Asha'man Testing

Aes Sedai bemoan the fact that their numbers are dwindling, the White Tower shrinking year by year. But thanks to the efforts of the Red Ajah, male channelers were virtually unheard of until recently. With the creation of the Black Tower men with the ability to channel the One Power, or the ability to learn, have a safe haven to learn about their abilities for the first time since the Breaking.

Mazrim Taim, the M’Hael of the Black Tower, began an active recruiting process. He, and others he taught, Traveled to various spots throughout the land to test men for the ability to channel. Clearly this active searching for candidates is the reason that the Black Tower’s numbers are already close to outstripping those of the White Tower.

The testing process itself is simple. An Asha’man channels a tiny amount of the Power to create a small flame between himself and the candidate. The candidate need only focus on the flame. If the candidate has the ability to channel, or the ability to learn, the Asha’man will feel a resonance from the man after about ten or fifteen minutes.

The Black Tower is quickly growing in numbers, and the active recruiting advocated by Taim is certainly responsible. Perhaps the White Tower would be well advised to follow a similar strategy.
