The Amayar
The existence of the Amayar is unknown to most mainlanders. The Amayar live on the Sea Folk’s islands, but are as uncomfortable away from land as most mainlanders. The Amayar are shorter and fairer than the Atha’an Miere. The Amayar follow what they call the Water Way. While not as pacifistic as the Way of the Leaf, the Water Way still values acceptance of what is rather than wishing for what might be. Violence is frowned upon, and violent crimes are extremely rare among the Amayar. Intermarriage between the Amayar and the Sea Folk does not occur. Both groups find the way of life of the other fairly unpleasant. However, the relationship between the Amayar and the Sea Folk is a good and peaceful one - other than what they trade for, neither group has anything the other desires. It is the Amayar who actually produce the famous "Sea Folk porcelain" and fine glassware that the Sea Folk trade in. The Amayar are not bothered in the least that the Sea Folk receive credit for their work. They feel no need to try selling their goods on the mainland themselves. It is not that they fear or dislike those living in the rest of the land - they just do not want strangers disrupting their way of life. The Amayar are very comfortable with the relationship they have with the Atha’an Miere, and have no desire to move out into the rest of the world.
